Friendster launches connection relationship graph server

by Kieran on June 21, 2007

Friendster announced today the successfully deployment of it’s “proprietary, next-generation, highly scalable graph server that tracks the connection relationships among its 45 million users around the world.” So what exactly is a connection relationship graph server? Like they say…pictures speak a thousand words.

Great, now that we all know what this is, now what? I asked a few of my friends who work at various Social Networking companies and every single one, including myself, view this as a “ho-hum” enhancement that seems like a bit of desperation by Friendster to steal some news and “buzz” from Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, et.al. Sorry Friendster, even though the enhanced visualization and usability is impressive. I have to ask the question…so what? Social Networking sites need to build widgets / features / applications / upgrades that make your offering more useful and beneficial. Not just a “nice to have”. When building these sorts of things you need to ask yourself what would happen if we took it away. If users revolt then you know it is important. If they barely notice? Well then spend your time building something else.

Hey Friendster, looking to make your service truly better and make up some ground in the Buzz department? Drop me a line…I am sure I can put together a few ideas better then this.
